Shimano: Alfine rear
The Shimano Alfine 8-speed hub brings off-road internal hub gears to the masses.
If you've hankered for the reliability and simplicity of a hub gear but never been able to afford a Rohloff Speedhub, the Alfine hub might be what you're looking for. Combined with a choice of NoTubes rims these wheels should minimise the time spent fixing gears and punctures.
We are expecting delivery of the new 11 speed version late September but the price will be around double the 8-speed version (£375 for the hub only).
About the hub:
Shimano Alfine can't match the gear range (or German engineering) of the Rohloff but for the money, Alfine is an unbeatable off-road internal gear system. Featuring 8 sealed gears covering a decent range and centerlock-disk compatibility, the Alfine is ideal for UK trail conditions - the simplicity and reliability of a singlespeed but easier to pedal. Hub weight excluding fittings: 1677g weighed on our scales.
You will also need:
A fitting kit (contains various small parts and non-turn washers you need to get the Alfine hub working), sprocket (32T front, 18T rear is a good place to start although offroad you might want to go with a 20T on the back) and shifter which are available through this site - please see "we also recommend..." over on the right. Vertical dropouts will also require a chain tensioner.

We try to keep alfine/arch builds in our in stock wheel collection.
