Just in time for building the winter training wheels the updated Shimano Centerlock hub is back in stock. The Centerlock disk attachment is not for everyone but if you like Centerlock or can use an adapter, it's a well priced hub at a sensible weight.
Priced at £30 for the front QR version, and the front 15mm, 20mm, rear QR or 12 x 142mm rear all at £45. Weights are around 167g front, 335g rear. A sample wheelset with black NoTubes ZTR Crests, black Competition spokes and silver brass nipples would cost £245.67.
The 'old-style' cup and cone bearings are easy to maintain but do need looking after before they become worn as the bearing surfaces can become pitted and these aren't easily replaceable. The drive-side rear is the bearing that needs most attention, though if it does become damaged you can replace the freehub for a new bearing surface. You'll also need to tighten the cones to the right tension, this isn't hard but is a different procedure from most sealed bearing hubs.
Verdict : a nice looking hub at a good price and weight, if you are prepared to keep it in shape.
